I have just returned from doing the Scottish Modified Car Show on Sunday and I can honestly say I saw and heard a few “firsts” and that is saying something for an old codger like me who has been in the industry for over forty years.
When Brian Parton from” FourCars ” told me about their new demo vehicle I must admit I listened but never really took in the numbers he was giving me. Brian is prone to getting excited over a new tweeter or anything car audio , so much so that I heard him tell me about the Panda but you really have to see and hear this thing to believe it.
SPL or Sound Pressure Level needs loads of power and is dangerous, Even short term exposure can cause permanent damage – Loudest recommended exposure WITH hearing protection is 140dB a Jet engine at 100 feet or a Gun Blast generates 140db the Loudest sound possible is 194dB and this wee Fiat Panda puts out 155+db easy. The amazing thing is that other car audio manufacturers have made loud systems before but always, either in Trucks or huge demo rooms with mains power supplies or filled a transit van full of batteries and subs, yes they make a big noise but that is all it is noise a panel vibrating distortion full racket that makes your chest cavity beat. The Fiat not only puts most Public Address systems to shame but it is Loud and Musical, that is a very difficult trick to pull off.
You could stand a cup of coffee on the roof of this car with the sound system at full pelt and not spill a drop, yet the windscreen gave up the ghost after a couple of hours and simply shattered after a 161.1 dB blast at 33Htz .
Volunteers with big hair (that lets me out) were invited to sit in the Panda with the door shut and the window open. The video that I took of this gives the impression that it was a windy day but on this sunny still Sunday the SPL was blowing the heads off these girls, God knows what it was doing to the rest of their organs but they all left with a strange grin on their faces!
Our own Vauxhall Corsa demonstrator has a Hertz system which kicks out 139db and can rattle the shop windows in Dunbar high street, sat quietly next to the Panda all day, it was simply outclassed.
